Remix

Do you personally feel that using new technologies to creatively remix and re-mash are valid forms of art and free speech?

I feel that using new technologies to creatively remix and re-mash works of art and music are definitely valid forms of art and free speech. I think when it becomes a little blurry as to who the artwork belongs to it can get a little more difficult.  In this world today, information is easily accessible and can be used and manipulated effortlessly. I guess I would take it as a compliment if someone was using my work, but I’m also not a famous visual artist or musician making much profit.  If someone is making a profit with my artwork I would definitely seek legal advice.  I do find a lot of inspiration in what other people are doing as far as creating visual artworks, but I don’t think I would feel comfortable with freely using their work in an obvious way.  I might take ideas or gain some insight on how to enhance something aesthetically, but most of all, I find it as inspiration, not complete duplication.

Do you support Doug Johnson’s statement that “current intellectual property law, especially copyright, works against the greater good of society”?

I think that we do have a lot of laws that work well to protect artists, but I also agree that it somewhat works against us in society.  We have to live in a world where we are constantly living against the law as Lawrence Lessig mentions in his TED Talk.  We have too many rules.  A lot of these laws/rules stifle creativity because the free use of material is looked at as being unethical in some situations. I’m honestly not too sure how I feel about all of this. I think I would have to experience something firsthand to know where I really stand.  On one hand, I think artworks being used for inspiration is okay.  On the other hand, if someone has their original artworks stolen for some other artist’s creative use (and this artists gives no credit), then we have a problem.

Here is an example of a remix/mash-up that I have always enjoyed:
